Pitfalls - Do’s and Don’ts

on Planting Living Willow

Do’s

  1. Prepare the ground - Living willow does much better without competition from weeds and grass.
  2. Keep the area around the willow free from weeds and grass.
  3. Oh, and did we say keep your hedge or living structure weed and grass free - It’s vital for the best result.
  4. The only problem with keeping the area free from weeds and grass is that the ground is likely to dry out more quickly.  Living willow likes to be kept wet so it’s important to mulch to keep the moisture in. However, this has the added bonus of keeping the weeds and grass at bay.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t let the living willow rods dry out before you plant them.
  2. Don’t plant if the ground is frozen.
  3. Don’t plant living willow too close to drains or foundations
  4. Don’t let the ground dry out before the living willow becomes established
