Recommended Spacing for Planting Living Willow Hedges or Borders

The following recommended spacing for planting living willow is a suggested balance between achieving a good visual or wind barrier, reasonably quickly and without breaking the bank.  These three aspects are variable so for example, if you want a denser hedge, plant closer together. If density and time are not so important as keeping the cost down, plant further apart. In general we suggest that you don’t plant living willow closer than 150mm or further than 400mm apart. If you intend to coppice the hedge at a later date, we suggest a minimum spacing of 200mm so that it’s accessible to coppice and the coppice shoots have space to grow in.
